The Ageng2024 conference took place from July 1-4, 2024, at the Agricultural University of Athens.
Over 300 participants from 35 different countries attended the event.
The University of Thessaly, and in particular the Laboratory of Agricultural Constructions and Environmental Control, presented their findings on a cascade hydroponic system. In this system, runoff from a primary cucumber crop was used to irrigate a secondary melon crop.
Ioannis Naunoulis highlighted the importance of minimizing water and fertilizer consumption for the sustainability of greenhouse cultivation in the Mediterranean.
The results demonstrated that reusing cucumber runoff to grow melons did not negatively impact melon production.
Moreover, this method significantly reduced the leaching of nitrate and phosphate ions into the environment.
