An article in the Greek smart farming magazine Agrotypos (March-April 2024 issue) titled “Closed Hydroponic Cultivation Systems” has been published by Prof. Dimitrios Savvas and Evangelos Giannothanasis from the Laboratory of Vegetable Production, Agricultural University of Athens.

The European Union has set a strategic goal under the Green Deal to reduce fertilizer consumption by 20% and nutrient losses by 50% by 2030 (European Green Deal 2019, 2019).

Greenhouse cultivation is an intensive form of plant production, and excessive fertilization can lead to significant environmental pollution.

The article analyzes how new technologies for recycling runoff can help save substantial amounts of valuable water and fertilizers, while also preventing water resource pollution.
