Agricultural Research Institute (Cyprus)

THE ROLE OF THE AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN THE ECONUTRI PROJECT IS AS FOLLOWS:

Task 2.1:

ARI will deploy effective composting procedures to optimize capture of nutrients in compost, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, that would otherwise be vulnerable to loss.

Reduce vulnerability to loss of nutrients contained in hydroponic waste solution or digestate of biogas production plants through immobilization in microbial biomass developing in composting piles.

Task 2.3:

ARI will validate nutrient recovery technologies to reduce nutrient emissions from organic biowastes.

Task 3.1:

ARI will deploy an agri-environmental sensing equipment (telemetric stations, soil sensors) in a potato experimental field in Cyprus to control fertilization, irrigation and pesticide applications to optimize resource-use efficiency and minimize nutrient losses in potato crops.

Task 3.3:

Reducing nutrient input through improving nutrient use efficiency. In this task, reduction of N input in soilless cultivation of tomato and lettuce will be implemented by replacing up to 1/3 of the standard NO3 supply by Cl, and after the crop, use the residual nutrient solution and crop residues for composting (interlinkage WP2.1).

Task 4.1:

ARI will test the effect of biochar on CO2, CH4, N2O and NH3 emissions in a cattle stable and during the composting process of cattle slurry under field conditions.

Task 4.2:

Reducing and monitoring emissions from barns. Reducing emissions from storages of organic residues and fields
