Prof. Dimitrios Savvas, coordinator of the ECONUTRI Project, participated in the international scientific symposium “Growing Media 2025: II International Symposium on Growing Media, Compost Utilization and Substrate Analysis for Soilless Cultivation” held in Freising, Germany, from 7 to 12 September 2025.
The symposium was organized under the support of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), in cooperation with the International Peatland Society (IPS), and hosted by the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT). Its scientific programme covered a broad range of topics including: novel raw materials, microbiology of growing media, compost applications, water and nutrient management, innovative cultivation systems, sustainability, biochar use, and future industry directions.
On Friday, September 12, Professor D. Savvas delivered one of the three invited keynote lectures in the session “Nutrition Management”. His lecture, titled “Current trends and challenges in nutrition of soilless cropping systems”, explored state-of-the-art practices and challenges in soilless cultivation.
A significant part of his presentation was dedicated to the results of research conducted at the Laboratory of Vegetable Crops of the Agricultural University of Athens over the past three years, within the framework of the Horizon Europe project ECONUTRI. These results provided innovative insights into sustainable nutrient management in soilless systems, contributing to the project’s mission of reducing nutrient losses, greenhouse gas emissions, and fertilizer dependency.
