Title: “Optimizing irrigation to prevent pollution in soil bound horticulture”
DSS Tool: Virtual Lysimeter

The ECONUTRI Project is pleased to announce the next event of its Online Hackathon Series, taking place on 13, 20 and 27 March 2026, at the World Horti Centre (WHC), Europa 1, 2672 ZX Naaldwijk, Room 2.77, hosted in Netherlands by Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and LTO GLASKRACHT NEDERLAND (LGNL).

This Hackathon will focus on improving nutrient and irrigation management in horticulture through the Virtual Lysimeter Decision Support System (DSS) tool and practical collaborations.

The programme is structured as follows:

On 13 March, students, water coaches and growers will gather at WHC for an introduction to the hackathon and guidance on the assignment, which focuses on irrigation optimization.

Following the first session, participants will receive a take-home challenge. During the week between 13 and 20 March, water coaches and growers will work on the assignment independently, while teachers will guide their students through it at school.

On 20 March, participants will meet again for a workshop on the assignment.

On 27 March, the final session will focus on the discussion of results and on collecting suggestions for improving the Virtual Lysimeter tool, again at WHC.

Throughout the period between 13 and 27 March, participants will also stay connected through an online Teams chat.

This hackathon will provide a valuable opportunity to engage students and practitioners in real-life problem solving, while exploring how digital solutions such as the Virtual Lysimeter can support more efficient irrigation practices and help prevent pollution in horticultural systems.
