An article published by Glastuinbouw Waterproof on 5 March 2025 highlights promising results from research linked to the ECONUTRI project, showing that higher sodium levels in recirculating cucumber cultivation do not necessarily lead to adverse effects.

Based on monitoring at seven commercial farms and follow-up observations at one farm in 2024, the findings suggest that growers may be able to delay or avoid drainage discharge, helping to save water and fertilisers while reducing nutrient emissions to the environment.

The research, carried out by Wageningen University & Research (WUR), supports ECONUTRI’S goal of advancing more sustainable and circular nutrient management practices in greenhouse horticulture.
