From 23-31 May 2024, funded by the Sino-European International Cooperation in Science and Technology (CECST) project, at the invitation of Prof. Rodney Thompson and Prof. Wim Voogt, the team of Hebei Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (HBAFS), consisting of three members, namely, Researcher Wang Liying, Associate Researcher Shi Jianshuo, and Dr. Jia Zhou, went to the University of Almeria, Spain, and the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands, respectively, to conduct academic visits. They discussed and exchanged Nitrogen and Phosphorus emission reduction technologies for facility vegetables and Decision System for Irrigation and Fertilisation (DSS), and visited the Research Experiment Station, Green Food Growing Farm and Organic Farm.
Decision Support System (DSS) for automated irrigation and fertiliser management of vegetable crops, visit to the research station of the Fundación Cajamar (“Las Palmerillas”) and the research station of the University of Almeria, Spain, at the University of Almeria. We visited various advanced fertiliser application systems, automated facilities that assist in fertiliser management. These typical cases of greenhouse digital monitoring and control of irrigation and fertiliser application decision-making systems are of great significance for the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus emissions from vegetables in China’s facilities.
At the Greenhouse Research Centre of Wageningen University, the Netherlands, Prof. Wim Voogt organised two academic seminars. Researcher Wang Liying introduced the nutrient management of facility vegetables in China, and the two sides exchanged the progress of the Sino-European project, with a focus on how to apply the decision support system for irrigation and fertilization in modern greenhouses, especially how to simulate the process of evaporation and leakage in the greenhouse system by using virtual evaporation and seepage apparatus to calculate the dynamic plant In particular, how to use virtual evapotranspiration and seepage simulator to calculate the dynamic water demand of plants as the basis of irrigation was discussed in depth. After the academic exchange, Professor Wim led the delegation to visit the Greenhouse Research Centre’s experiments as well as three green farms and organic farms specialising in the production of tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, cucumbers and cherry radishes, to see how the operation and management of automatic irrigation and fertiliser systems can support green and efficient vegetable production, improve water and fertiliser efficiency and reduce nitrogen and phosphorus emissions.

During the nine-day seminar and exchanges, the scientists and technicians got a better understanding of the theory and practice of nitrogen and phosphorus emission reduction in the green and efficient production of vegetables in European facilities, especially the research and development principle and functioning mechanism of the Decision Support System for Irrigation and Fertilisation of Vegetables in Facilities (DSS), which provided them with a more in-depth understanding and intuitive feeling of it. This visit will provide a good theoretical reference and practical reference for the research of nitrogen and phosphorus emission reduction technology in the process of livestock and poultry wastewater storage, treatment and return to the field in the Sino-European project.
