SUMMARY:Open Day - Laboratory of Agricultural Structures and Environmental
Control of the University of Thessaly
DESCRIPTION:INVITATION\nOpen day for the public\nOPEN DAY\nThe Laboratory o
f Agricultural Structures and Environmental Control of the University of T
hessaly organizes an open day at the facilities of the Pilot Greenhouse Pa
rk of the Laboratory of Agricultural Structures &amp\; Environmental Contr
ol at the University of Thessaly Farm in Velestino and invites all those i
nterested to visit the Greenhouse Park on Monday\, May 20\, 2024\, from 10
 :00 to 15:00.\n\nAddress: Old National Road Volos - Larissa\nDirections (G
oogle Maps): https://maps.app.goo.gl/SifFko8BzSwdfaQP7\n\nThe aim of the e
vent is to present the technologies and practices tested by the team of th
e Agricultural Structures Laboratory in the framework of its participation
in a series of research projects such as PestNu (Horizon 2020)\, ECONUTRI
(Horizon Europe)\, REGACE (Horizon Europe) and others\, which are being i
mplemented in the Pilot Greenhouse Park.\nIn addition\, the event aims at
networking between participants and stakeholders\, both to exploit researc
h results and to discuss needs for further research.\n\nIn the Pilot Green
house Park developed and operated by the Laboratory of Agricultural Struct
ures\, one of the largest in the Mediterranean\, with a high level of inst
alled technology and specialization in hydroponics\, a network of experime
ntal approaches based on the idea of recycling and circular economy protoc
ols in hydroponic crops is underway.\n\nThe Laboratory team designs\, deve
lops and evaluates technologies for the greenhouse\, leveraging funding fr
om participation in prestigious and far-reaching European research project
s\, taking a holistic approach to the idea of circular economy. The projec
ts aim to achieve rational management of inputs\, reduce and reuse outputs
\, increase the resource use efficiency and productivity of greenhouse sys
tems and reduce their environmental footprint.\n\nThe PestNu project (Gree
n Deal Horizon 2020)\, a consortium of 20 partners from 9 different Europe
an countries\, aims to reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides in agr
iculture through the use of agro-ecological practices and digital and smar
t agriculture technologies. The PestNu project evaluates in the overall fo
od production chain system\, from the farm to the consumer's plate\, smart
digital technologies\, the interconnection of computational\, engineering
and digital machines\, data analysis methodologies\, artificial intellige
nce solutions and automated decision support processes. Robotic AI traps f
or real-time pest control and autonomous mobile robots for on-site 3D spot
spraying of plants are also being tested. Finally\, agroecological and bi
ological practices are being evaluated\, such as automated agricultural wa
ste recycling systems\, on-site production of biofertilisers from agricult
ural waste and wastewater through an automated runoff recycling system.\n\
nIn the framework of the ECONUTRI project (Horizon Europe)\, the Laborator
y developed and tested in the Pilot Greenhouse Park technologies and pract
ices for smart crop fertilization management\, incorporating solutions tha
t are part of a holistic concept based on nutrient recycling and protocols
for circular economy systems (Cascade Hydroponics) in the management of w
ater and nutrients in hydroponic crops.\n\nIn the framework of the REGACE
project (Horizon Europe)\, the Laboratory's team has undertaken to investi
gate an important challenge: to implement photovoltaic systems that will p
roduce electricity on the roofs of greenhouses inside which cabbage crops
will be grown. The challenge lies in the fact that these two systems\, pho
tovoltaic and greenhouses\, operate in competition with each other\, as bo
th need solar radiation. In order to address this challenge\, PTH will ins
tall in the Pilot Greenhouse Park\, inside the greenhouse and above the cr
op\, photovoltaic panels\, which will have the peculiarity that they will
be able to rotate on their axis\, thus making it possible to adjust their
position and thus the shading they will cause in the greenhouse environmen
t and will then investigate their impact on both the crop and the electric
ity produced. The aim of the project is to develop the optimal management
strategy for photovoltaic plants\, which will allow the maximum possible u
tilization of solar radiation for electricity production and at the same t
ime ensure the optimal conditions for crop growth. The maximum profit will
thus be obtained from the optimal combination of electricity production a
nd greenhouse products\, while the greenhouse\, with the energy from the p
hotovoltaic panels\, will cover its energy needs and the excess can be sup
plied to the grid\, thus making the greenhouse more sustainable and produc
tive. A carbon dioxide enrichment parameter of the greenhouse will be adde
d to the system to investigate the improvement of crop productivity in low
light conditions. In addition to the economic impact\, there is also a po
sitive impact on the ecological-environmental sustainability of the greenh
ouse\, as the project will contribute to the diversity of the energy produ
ction market in which greenhouse owners will be able to play an important
role.\nThe Director of the Laboratory of Agricultural Structures and Envir
onmental Control of the University of Thessaly\nNikolaos Katsoulas\, Profe

the full potential of data-based decision-making is to be realised.\n\nHo
w should the data be gathered in the first place?\n\nHow much data is need
ed\, and can there be an excess that hinders rather than helps?\n\nWho own
s the data?\n\nHow should it be processed and interpreted to obtain maximu
m benefit?\n\nWho takes responsibility if things go wrong? How far down th
e AI route should we go?\n\nWhere in the dairy foods chain could data use
have most (and least) impact?\nProgram\nTo download the program\, please c

SUMMARY:30th European Society for Rural Sociology Congress
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 ESRS conference will take up the theme of Navigating
rural transitions: Exploring liveable futures.\n\nAs we navigate ongoing t
ransitions\, an exploration of liveable rural futures calls on us to consi
der the diverse range of challenges and possibilities that lie ahead: from
a just\, sustainable\, and ‘worth living’ futures for all\, to surviv
able or even catastrophic futures\, and everything in between.\n\nUndersto
od this way\, the pursuit of a liveable rural future requires engagement w
ith critical social-political and social-ecological questions related to\,
among others\, farming\, agriculture\, and food systems\, justice and dis
criminations\, the politics of knowledge\, social mobilisations and agency
 \, migration and mobility\, technologies\, connections and solidarity\, ca
re and hope. Additionally\, the importance of (local) democracy\, collecti
ve action\, and the development of (relatively) autonomous forms of organi
sation in rural areas\, such as the rural commons\, may also be considered
.\n\nAddressing these topics means engaging with the lived experiences and
practices of people today\, while also taking into account what they aspi
re and hope for. This requires working with\, questioning and developing n
ew theories and methods. It also requires discussions about the roles of r
esearchers and what type of actions are needed.

SUMMARY:19th international RAMIRAN conference
DESCRIPTION:We warmly invite you to the 19th international RAMIRAN conferen
ce in the university city of Wageningen\, NL\, from 15-17 October 2025. Re
cycling of Agricultural\, Municipal and Industrial Residues in Agriculture
Network (RAMIRAN) is a research and expertise network that was set up mor
e than 25 years ago to improve nutrient utilization and minimize the envir
onmental impact of livestock manure and other organic material used in agr
icultural systems (www.ramiran.eu). This conference was last held in 2023
and attracted up to 350 delegates from across Europe and beyond. RAMIRAN 2
025 will be organized by Wageningen University &amp\; Research.\nWhat is i
t about?\nThe conference will focus on the management of organic residues
and manures in agriculture. In the context of climate change and environme
ntal pressure\, safe and sustainable utilisation of existing and emerging
organic resources becomes increasingly important\, as is taking into accou
nt potential trade-offs or synergies. The conference will address the many
facets of their application in agriculture\, using the following seven se
ssions:\n\n&gt\; Agronomic value:\n\nThe use of organic resources from fo
od processing\, sewage sludge\, and municipal bio-wastes as fertilizer or
soil conditioner is expected to increase over the coming decade\, because
of the ambitious targets of recycling of wastes. The amount and plant-avai
lability of nutrients and the stability of organic matter in these new res
ources are often unknown. In addition\, treatment and measures to reduce e
missions from livestock manures affect their composition and agronomic val
ue. In this session\, the agronomic value of manure and organic resources
and the management of these products in different agro-ecosystems are disc
ussed.\n\n&gt\; GHG emissions:\n\nAmbitious goals are set to reduce green
house gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture. During the production\, storag
e\, and use of organic resources\, emissions of methane (CH₄) and nitrou
s oxide (N₂O) may occur. Organic resources are also a source of carbon\,
and their use can aid in its sequestration in soil. This session focuses
on the quantification of GHG emissions from the production\, storage and u
se of organic resources and the development and scientific underpinning of
mitigation strategies.\n\n&gt\; Air quality:\n\nEmissions of ammonia (NH
 3) and nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) from agriculture to the atmosphere contribu
te to nitrogen deposition on ecosystems\, which may cause loss of biodiver
sity and soil acidification. In addition\, elevated atmospheric concentrat
ions of NH3\, NOₓ\, but also of particulate matter\, and non-methane vol
atile organic compounds (NMVOC) can negatively impact human health. In thi
s session\, studies on emissions of NH3\, NOₓ and other pollutants from
organic resources are presented\, including novel measurement techniques.\
n\n&gt\; Water quality:\n\nThe application of organic resources to agricu
ltural soils may lead to leaching and surface runoff of nitrogen and phosp
horus to ground and surface waters. In many regions in the EU\, the water
quality does not meet the nitrate limits of the Nitrates Directive and the
ecological and chemical standards of the Water Framework Directive. The u
se of organic resources also results in poor water quality in other region
s in the world due to nutrient losses. Additionally\, it may result in wat
er pollution with contaminants\, such as heavy metals\, hormones and organ
ic contaminants. This session addresses topics related to the use of organ
ic resources and water quality.\n\n&gt\; Soil quality:\n\nApplication of
organic residues to soils is challenging while preventing soil contaminati
on\, especially with ‘emerging contaminants’\, such as microplastics\,
nanoparticles and pharmaceuticals. On the other hand\, organic resources
can improve soil quality and carbon sequestration by adding organic matter
and nutrients. They may improve soil structure\, soil biodiversity\, and
soil fertility. In this session\, insights on the positive and negative ef
fects of organic resource use on soil quality are discussed\, with specifi
c attention to the impacts of new products new.\n\n&gt\; Integral analysi
s:\n\nA combination of measures needs to be taken to increase nutrient use
efficiency\, improve soil quality and reduce gaseous emissions and leachi
ng from organic resources to meet the targets of different environmental p
olicies. Combinations of measures may have synergies and thereby strengthe
n their effects\; however\, there is also a risk of trade-offs or pollutio
n swapping. Various types of pollution swapping between measures may take
place. This session addresses integral studies on management of organic re
sources and emissions of different compounds at scales from farm to contin
ent.\n\n&gt\; Policy and regulation:\n\nMany policies and regulations at
local\, national\, continental\, and global scale deal with the use of org
anic resources\, but contain a different focus. They aim e.g. to reduce th
e emission of atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases\, reduce nutrien
t leaching to groundwater or lower the concentration of contaminants in so
il and water bodies at different scales. In this session\, the effectivity
of policies and regulations related to the use of organic resources are d
iscussed. What is needed to increase the effectivity of these policies?\n\
