On 11 June 2024, Professor Huang Huanzhong, Professor of Dongguan Institute of Technology and Professor Emeritus of the Department of Biology, Hong Kong Baptist University, was invited to the School of Resource and Environment, China Agricultural University, to give a special lecture entitled „The Potential and Development of Carbon Cycle Using Biomass Waste“.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Professor Huang elaborated on the four research directions of biomass waste fueling, biomass fertilisation, biopolymers, and thermochemical conversion technologies, which are of great significance in promoting China’s green and low-carbon energy transition and realising the goal of dual-carbon strategy. During the question and answer session, Professor Huang Huanzhong exchanged views with faculty members and postgraduate students on cutting-edge scientific research, expanding the horizons of low-cost and high-value multi-dimensional resource utilisation of biomass solid waste.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

On the morning of 13th June, Prof. Huang Huanzhong participated in a technical exchange meeting between the Econutri project team from China and Europe and the Beijing Facility Vegetable Residue Reduction Post Expert Team.
\nThe first half of the meeting was focused on the theme of „Resourceful Utilisation of Waste“, and the doctoral students gave wonderful academic reports on related topics. Xu Zhao introduced the important role of aerobic composting in removing pathogenic bacteria from cucumber residue plants and the effect of disease suppression. Anqi Wang shared the research progress of food waste composting on pollutant gas emission reduction at various stages. Xian Wang’s study revealed the potential value of the combination of biogas and Bacillus subtilis in promoting cucumber growth and disease suppression. Zihao’s study combined high-value conversion of biomass sugar and low-energy electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production. Zhou Lin presented a study on the binding characteristics of modified biochar-derived dissolved organic matter with cadmium heavy metal, and explored the adsorption characteristics of modified biochar on cadmium heavy metal in environmental remediation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

In the second half of the session, PhD student Jilin Lei discussed the effects of DMPP on nitrogen uptake and inter-root microbial mechanisms in maize, providing a theoretical basis for improving nitrogen utilisation efficiency. Lulu Wei introduced the effects of different carbon sources on soil phosphorus patterns, which is important for improving soil fertility. Ran Hongyao revealed the effects of the gradient distribution of physicochemical properties within the soil-organic material microdomain on the nitrogen transformation process. Dr Junhui Yin from Sun Yat-sen University introduced the mechanism of fungal denitrification on the regulation of nitrous oxide emission from acidic soils, which provides new ideas for mitigating greenhouse gas emission.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Associate Professor Zhu Koon from School of Land Science and Technology, Professor Chen Qing, Professor Zhao Xin, Associate Professor Li Yanming, Associate Professor Chang Ruixue from School of Resource and Environment, Postdoctoral Fellow Yin Junhui from Sun Yat-sen University, and PhD students Xu Zhao, Wang Anqi, Wang Xian, Wang Zhihao, and Zhou Lin took part in the exchange discussion. The symposium provided a platform for the participating teachers and students to demonstrate and exchange ideas, and promoted in-depth cooperation and development of research in various fields.<\/p>\n
